When you paddle South Platte River below Greeley in Colorado you may notice this mysterious structure on the right shore just above confluence with the Poudre River.
An old cabin? Remains of a fort? You may have to look back over your right shoulder or even better paddle upstream to spot it.
This picture was shot three years ago on January 4, 2004 when I was paddling my Sea Wind canoe starting at the Mitani-Tokuyasu SWA. At that time was using my first digital camera, Canon PowerShot S40.
After a closer examination, the mystery building appears to be an old outhouse ... A summer camp or picnic place? On some maps you can find a name "Scout Island" around this place. I couldn't find any information on-line about Scout Island at this specific location. Of course, Scout Island is a popular name and is showing up on different rivers in USA including the South Platte in Nebraska.
