From the Love Life of Canada Goose in My Paddling Pond: Rivals or Mates?

Canada Goose in Wikipedia.

My quiet paddling pond (Arapaho Bend Natural Area in Fort Collins) was not so quiet last night. When I am starting to paddle there early in spring, geese usually are already sitting on their nests. Then, I see them with goslings. Yesterday, I did witness some more aggressive action as you can see in my pictures.

First, I thought that the two goose boys were fighting and one of them was chased away from an island. But, geese cannot be that territorial. Rivals or mates? It could be a goose girl trying to escape away from intense love advances by a goose boy. Maybe, it was a boy running away ...

Maybe, it was what geese are just doing during mating season and I need to be educated. Anyway, the action was intense. It looked like one goose was fighting for life and barely escaped after being almost drowned. And, I was completely ignored in my kayak.

The light was poor, the tippy Thunderbolt-X was not the best photography platform, and Pentax Optio W10 was not the best action camera, but it was ready.
