Sunset over the Rocky Mountains Front Range Contemplated from a Racing Kayak

Front Range sunset

Boyd Lake near Loveland is less crowded with power boats than Horsetooth Reservoir, so I am taking my Thunderbolt kayak to the Boyd for a sunset workout unless I really want to practice in a rough and confused water of the narrow Horsetooth.

When paddling the Boyd Lake you can enjoy a nice wide view of the Rocky Mountains Front Range. The mountains look spectacular at sunrise, especially, earlier in the year when there is still a lot of snow at high elevations.

However, there is one problem with shooting sunrise pictures of the mountains: a tall power line along western shore of the lake. It is quite visible and obstructive in the sun light. It is why I am shooting this vista mostly at sunset when I can blend this power line into the foothills silhouette. If you look more carefully you can still see three power line posts in the above picture.

The second sunset picture would be better if I would wait a little longer for the sun to hide over the mountains. However, a large boat wake was coming ...

During last paddling I also had a short photo session in the Boyd Lake marina. You can always find some interesting reflections around sail boats.

When shooting from the Thunderbolt kayak I usually use my paddle to stabilize the camera (Pentax Optio W10) unless the water is really calm.
