More Colorful Than Kayaks: Hot Air Balloons

hot air balloon Greeley Colorado

hot air balloons over South Platte River Last Sunday morning I was photographing the 2007 Hot Air Balloon Harvest in Greeley, Colorado. It was my first close encounter with hot air balloons. Of course, I have tried to shoot balloons before whenever they were flying over my head, but never got good shots of them. Paddling the South Platte River at sunrise may provide you some opportunities.

At the Greeley festival I was using my Canon EOS 10D camera with Canon 70~200 f/2.8L IS lens. I had my wide angle zoom lens ready, but didn't have a chance to change. I was shooting mostly from a tripod except some shots of the balloons directly above me. I missed some fast rising balloons. It is time to upgrade my old 10D to the newest 40D.

My paddling camera, Pentax Optio W10, was busy too. Connie shot some good pictures with it.

It was a very colorful and somewhat overwhelming experience. I spent most of the day processing pictures.

I have a feeling that I will be attending these hot air balloons festivals in the future. There are a few of them every year in Colorado. Of course, there is the big balloon fiesta in Albuquerque, not so far away from me.

OK, back to paddling now.
