There are two annual paddling trips on the South Platte each spring which are open for all paddlers and they are well suited for beginners. So, if you are new to paddling in Colorado or if you are thinking about a big trip from Denver down all the way to Missouri River, here is your chance to see your river and meet some local paddlers.

March 18, 2007 - Evans Riverside Park to Kersey (9 mile) or Kuner (15 miles).
.. from Dave Allured, a trip coordinator:
Everyone is invited to the Sixth Annual South Platte River Joint Spring
Paddle Trip. This is a casual class I day trip with two destinations at
9 and 14 river miles. The location is Evans to Kuner, southeast of
Greeley, Colorado. We expect about 30 to 40 people. Canoes, sea
kayaks, and most any type of low draft small paddle craft would be
appropriate.
This event is hosted by Rocky Mountain Canoe Club, Poudre Paddlers Club,
Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club, Canoe Colorado, and High Country River Rafters. For more details, please visit Rocky Mountain Canoe Club web site.
March 24th is the alternate date in case of bad weather on the 18th.
This is an easy stretch of the river with two very short portages over diversion dams. Most of my winter paddling pictures come from this river segment.
If this trip sounds too easy we may have something more challenging for you ...

March 18, 2007 - Kersey to Evans Riverside Park (9 miles upstream) - Rotten Egg Race
Eric Nyre suggests an informal race starting about 6 am at Kersey (it will be before sunrise) with a goal to join the club trip at Evans before they start to paddle down river.
I paddled that course in March 2005 in Sisson Nucleus kayak in 4.5 hours with the river flow of 470 cfs. I started at 6;30 am and reached Evans at 11:00 when the group was just starting to paddle.
I did a similar paddling in March 2002 to join the club trip but starting at Mitani-Tokuyasu State Wilderness Area in Spencer X-treme canoe as a training before Texas Water Safari. It took me 3.5 hours to cover 7 miles upstream including two portages at 520 cfs river flow. Mitani-Tokuyasu SWA is now closed for spring and summer months, so this shorter option is not possible.

April 22 - Brighton to Ft Lupton (12 miles)
Annual beginners trip organized by Canoe Colorado. Check their web page for the trip description and pictures or contact Eric Nyre for details.
This is also an easy stretch of the river with a one boat chute run to add a little bit of spice and one potential portage over a diversion dam (that dam gates may be open and runnable).
