Big Thompson River ?

Big Thompson Riverold school - pinhole image Big Thompson River had a pretty healthy flow during last days: ~70 cfs at Loveland and ~140 cfs at mouth near La Salle. On Sunday afternoon we went with Connie to do some scouting of this river from I-25 to Milliken.

It was really a lot of water flowing in a narrow channel. The river was lovely in some places, wildly meandering in cottonwood groves. Fallen trees and sharp turnings would make it a great technical river for paddling, perhaps, in a plastic white water kayak. Some tight spots would be rather challenging for my Sisson. At other places the river was slow and calm as in the picture above.

Of course, there were barbed wire fences. We were able to see the river near bridges only. Typically, there were wires on both side of each bridge. At some bridges, the access to the river and/or portage over road would be very difficult. Nevertheless, I am going to try to do some paddling on Big Thompson if I can catch the high flow. Probably, I will try some upstream-downstream paddling first. With that fast current a mile or two without fences would be sufficient for a decent workout. I am working on a "barbed wire fence emergency kit" ...

We ended our scouting trip with a photo session at an old abandoned school building on Weld County road 52, a couple of miles west of Johnstown. In addition to regular pictures I shot some pinholes. The above picture is a pinhole image after adding some dry brush effect in Photoshop. You can see a larger version of this picture together with the original pinhole image before digital manipulation on photo.net.
