Paddling Thunderbolt Kayak in Tight Places - Lone Tree Creek

When paddling the South Platte River I like to explore narrow river arms and creeks joining the river. It is easier to discover them when paddling upstream. You are just going too fast down river to pay attention to these narrow passages. Of course, a lot depends on the water level.

I have several favorite narrow channels along the 50 miles of South Platte River I usually paddle. Some of them you see in my winter paddling video.

These pictures are from my paddling on the South Platte a week ago. I started at Kersey and paddled upstream. Water was pretty high (~1500cfs) after two days of heavy rain.

After 1 mile of paddling I reached a mouth of Lone Tree Creek (no relation to Lone Tree Reservoir southwest of Loveland). I have tried to explore that creek in the past, but never managed to go further than 200 yards. This time I managed to squeeze my Thunderbolt much further, about 1/4 mile upstream. A narrow channel, tall grass and weed, marsh, a sense of wilderness.

When I was paddling back down river I approached the shore to photograph some old cars. It was where the biggest surprise of that trip was waiting for me, but that's another story.
